Better Than Mamma’s is resident at The Old School House Monday-Thursday until 22nd August and will be serving an African-Caribbean menu from 12-3pm. My advice to you is head down there while you can and spice up your summer!
Blazing August it is not as I write this, so we decided to go and get some sunshine food into our day. It was great. The café is tiny and by the time we’d been sitting there a while, we were chatting with the chef, Yaw, and other patrons as though we’d know each other for years. It felt a bit like being in someone’s house.
There was a very relaxed atmosphere in the kitchen and we had a cup of tea while we waited for the food to be ready. Yaw gave Peter a little taste of spicy fish soup which he said was wonderful, but he the tea to cool his mouth down!
I had the most delicious butternut and spinach stew and Peter had lamb and potato curry. We shared some fried plaintain and some home-made coconut cake (calories don’t count when you’re eating someone else’s cake!)
Yaw sat down and had a chat with us while we were eating, so we found out a bit about him and the café. Creating good food is his passion and amongst other things, he’s been teaching students how to make three meals for two for £5 – yes, you read that right. I asked him all about that. He’s very kindly agreed to send us some recipes so we can share them with you.
Better Than Mamma’s is only doing lunches until 22nd August, but they’ll be there on the first Friday evening of the month for their Feed Body Feed Soul Event. See below for details of the September event.
