Remember These Tip When You Return Your Hire Car

We get a mixture of business and holiday guests and we’ve had quite a few fly into the UK, hire a car and travel to Milton Keynes from the airport.

Most of us will hire a car from time to time. And if you’re like me you’ll always be juggling 101 things and up against the clock. That can mean that when you return your hired car things get overlooked or you forget to complete the return procedure properly.

Here are five tips to keep in mind for the next time you return your hire car.

1. Give yourself plenty of time to complete the return process

On one occasion I was held up in traffic and returned the car an hour after the return time and was charged for an extra day! Give yourself plenty of time to get to the return site. When travelling in an unfamiliar city, allow extra time. You never know when a traffic jam or construction traffic could cause a delay.

2. Take photos of the things for which you could be charged extra

If you rented your car without unlimited mileage, be sure to snap a photo of the odometer when you return it. It is also a good idea to take a photo of the fuel gauge. If your car had any damage when you collected it, raise it at the time and make sure it’s documented in the rental agreement. Take a photo of the damage to show you did not make the damage any worse.

3. Check for your belongings in the car

Blindingly obvious, I know. But still – check and double-check the inside of the car, under the seats, in the pockets and in the boot to make sure you did not leave anything behind. You’d be amazed what people leave behind. It’s often mobile phones or paperwork with personal information. Make sure you have your phone in your hand when you return the keys. It may not seem like a big deal to leave the rental car paperwork behind, but that paperwork may have your driver’s licence information, address or other personal information. That could leave you vulnerable for identify theft or personal theft in the wrong hands.

4. Watch your mileage

If you rented from a company that has limitation on mileage, be sure to keep an eye on your odometer. This is more common with luxury rentals or international rentals. Be aware of the fine print to avoid any surprise fees when you return the car.

5. Fill up with fuel

Rental companies charge a premium rate for fuel so make sure you fill up. NB Don’t leave it until the last minute. Fuel stations near an airport often charge significantly more per litre, so fill up on the way to the airport, not when you get there.
