The lazy days of summer are over, and September brings new energy as people begin to focus on what needs to get done before the end of the year.
Maybe it’s years of WH Smiths “Back to School” window displays. Even as an adult, autumn feels like the right time to take a language class or cookery course, sign up for pottery or in my case quilt making. Last week I was thinking idly about things I’d like to start learning or doing … for some reason I have a yen to make a patchwork quilt. It may even end up on the Butterfly bed!! I am not at all crafty, so I don’t know why. But quilts are so beautiful, and they often reflect a family’s history in the fabrics used. I’m planning to put in some of the indigo coloured fabric used in my wedding suit …
September’s a great time for new projects. We no longer worry about missing a sunny evening in the garden, plus having a project during the transitional season helps to set us up for the gloomy winter months, a time it can be tempting to mentally fast-forward through.
There are some absolutely brilliant workshop options in Milton Keynes (and if you don’t fancy doing them yourself, they might be a rather good Christmas present for the person-who-has -got -everything).
One I particularly like is the Cold Smoking Cookery School, an artisan cookery school based in the grounds of Linford Manor Park in Great Linford. It’s the only artisan cookery school in Milton Keynes and in fact the whole of Buckinghamshire. The cookery school is owned and operated by Turan and his wife Alison who have been running the company for over ten years now.
It sets itself apart from other cookery schools by focussing on artisan food and drink and the age-old skills associated with these ancient arts. They offer workshops like cheese making chocolate making, cider making, fermenting food and sausage making – there’s even a veggie-based food smoking option.
If you decide on a new goal or goals in September, not only will you free yourself of the pressure to set resolutions at New Year, but you may even have some impressive results to show by then and with luck the momentum will continue right through to February and past the risk of winter blues!
