It just goes to show …. you can live in a place for 30 years and still discover some wonderful local treats. One of our first Butterfly Loft guests told us about the Chafor Vinery and we are indebted to her.
Chafor is a family-run boutique wine estate at nearby Gawcott. It’s fabulous to have local wines! Chafor has created a lovely range of English still and sparkling wines, for every occasion:
Set in 23 acres of Buckinghamshire countryside, the winery, hand-built tasting room and mezzanine art gallery are complemented by a self-guided nature trail and lake-side area, ideal for picnics and family days out.
The winery opens its doors to the public most weekends from May to September 11am-4pm and runs a full programme of tours and tasting events including Pizza & Pinot evenings (its pop-up restaurant with authentic wood fired pizzas) plus a variety of special themed open days. There are ample car parking facilities. Group bookings are very welcome.
You can visit the vineyard for tours, tastings and cellar door sales (the best times to visit are from April to October). As it is a working winery, it is only open to the public on selected days and by appointment. Before making a special journey, please always check if it is open.
The vinery is owned by the Tim and Stephanie Chafor. Tim is passionate about his work. Describing himself as “a keen gastronome, one-time movie star and a self-confessed ‘mad inventor’ “.
Tim has created some weird and wonderful contraptions around the estate, including a hand-built frost buster alarm system, which rings his mobile once the air temperature reaches -0.5°C, an authentic wood-fired pizza oven and giant paella stove (where the flavours are subtly enhanced by vine clippings, direct from the vineyard). This is a man who loves his work so much that he has even been known to fly back part way through family holidays to tend to his precious vines!
Tim’s partner-in-vine is wife Stephanie, a self-confessed foodie, with a strong career background in food technology and nutrition and a passion for quality wine.
